SEASON AT A GLANCE AT OKANAGAN LAVENDER
APRIL
April sees us trimming any lavenders not done in the fall and also doing severe pruning on old woody plants. We start annual herbs from seed in our greenhouse and begin to propagate new perennial herbs from our collections. Some plants are divided and others might be replaced by more suitable selections. We start fresh batches of cold-process soap to have ready for our May opening.
MAY
May sees us doing any replanting that needs attending to and planting an abundance of annuals for colour all season. The gift boutique and gardens reopen for our regular season hours on the Mother's Day weekend. We begin to bottle essential oils from the previous season.
JUNE
June sees the early lavenders begin to show their purple blush and sometimes we begin harvest by the end of June.
JULY
July sees the harvest in full swing and is definitely the most beautiful time of year to visit the farm if your are looking for that 'purple wow'. We host the first of a two part harvest celebration called 'Lavender Discovery Days' focussing on lavender as a culinary herb and fresh lavender crafts.
AUGUST
August sees us distilling the very aromatic lavender flowers to capture the beautiful pure essential oil of the plant. We host the second part of our 'Lavender Discovery Days' celebrations, this time focussing on distillation. We also do a great deal of propagating in August.
SEPTEMBER
September is a time to trim all of the spent blooms of the display lavenders. Lavenders that were cut for distillation need to be reshaped before winter. This is also the time we are hand-stripping the lavender in earnest so that we can use the lavender buds in our finished products.
OCTOBER
October sees us continuing to strip the lavender, sifting and sorting it. We also process the herbs basil, rosemary, lemon grass and oregano here at the farm as well as many floral blooms and tea ingredients.
NOVEMBER
November is when we catch our breath and open the shop to celebrate 'Christmas in the Country'. It's a time we love as we get a chance to do up many of our culinary products to sample ~ and to take the time to enjoy and give thanks to our many wonderful customers.
DECEMBER TO MARCH
December through March sees us creating our many products which we also sell to select retail stores and our mail order customers. This is also the time when much of our sewing is done and all of the paperwork must be caught up on!
