Clean Beauty & Rose Petals

We have always taken pride in the fact that we do not use any additives, fillers or artificial preservatives or fragrances in our products. To complement our own farm-grown ingredients, we carefully select sustainability sourced, organic and Fair Trade oils, butters, essential oils and botanicals.

We also continually research the benefits and uses of plants we grow (and plants we could grow!), and how we could incorporate their essential oil, hydrosol or dried petals or leaves into a natural skin care product.

This past winter we submitted a few of our favourite products to be judged and evaluated in Canada's Clean Beauty Awards, and we were over the moon to learn that our Mature Skin Botanical Toner (renamed our Sensitive Skin Botanical Toner) won third in the Face Care category!

This delicate yet incredibly fragrant toner has only three ingredients: rose hydrosol, lavender essential oil and chamomile essential oil. We chose to use our rose hydrosol because of its balancing, astringent and anti-inflammatory properties which make it especially beneficial for mature skin.

And at this time of year, we are busy distilling a lot of it!

Scattered all throughout our farm are rose bushes which are slowly and methodically harvested by hand. It is difficult to rush a harvest when you risk getting poked by thorns!

Basket after basket is delivered to the still, before being weighed and placed into the hopper.

We use steam distillation for all of our plants, which extracts varying amounts of essential oil and hydrosol depending on the plant material. Roses produce minimal amounts of essential oil when steam distilled and their yield of hydrosol is quite low as well - it takes one kilogram of petals to produce only 300 millilitres of rosewater!

But the result is a sweet and complex floral water that can be used directly on the skin, or in a delicious summer cocktail.

On our farm, we strongly believe in the power of plants and we are always trying to deliver exceptional products to our customers that truly benefit the skin, the body and the soul. Receiving recognition from the Clean Beauty Awards was an incredible validation of our efforts, and an encouraging pat on the back to keep harvesting, continue distilling and never stop researching new ideas for natural skin care solutions!
