Botanical Palettes ~ The Art of Layering Hydrosols

One of the loveliest things about hydrosols is their simplicity.

Each begins with a single plant — grown, gathered and steam distilled to capture its beautifully subtle aromatic water. Used on its own, a hydrosol allows us to experience the character of that plant. But layer one with another, and something entirely new begins to emerge.

We like to think of this as creating a Botanical Palette.

Begin with one plant

There is no need to begin with a recipe.

Choose a hydrosol whose aroma you enjoy and add it to your water-based diffuser. Take a moment to experience it on its own. Is it bright? Floral? Green? Herbaceous? Woody?

Then choose a second botanical and add just one drop.

Pause and smell again.

You may be surprised by how much that single drop changes what you experience.

Perfumers understand that one drop can transform a blend — and one drop too many can overwhelm it. Hydrosols are much softer aromatically than essential oils, but the same principle applies. Some botanicals happily share the stage; others have a remarkably strong presence.

Our Red Cedar Hydrosol is a perfect example. Its deep, woody aroma can quickly change a blend, so we add it drop by drop, allowing the aroma to unfold before deciding whether it needs another.

Explore contrast

Part of the pleasure is discovering what happens when botanicals with very different characters meet.

Try pairing:

Lemon Verbena + Rose Geranium
Bright, green citrus meets a soft, rosy floral note.

Lemon Verbena + Rosemary
Fresh citrus becomes greener and more herbaceous.

Lemon Verbena + Red Cedar
A touch of deep, woody cedar grounds Lemon Verbena's bright citrus character. With this one especially, begin with plenty of Lemon Verbena and add the Red Cedar one drop at a time.

You can explore the same idea with other hydrosols — pairing floral with herbal, bright with woody, or fresh with earthy.

Begin. Layer. Notice.

There really isn't a correct formula.

Start with the botanical you want to experience most prominently. Add your second hydrosol one drop at a time, pausing between additions to notice how the aroma changes.

You might stop after a single drop. You might discover that you prefer the second botanical to play a larger role. Or you might be inspired to introduce a third.

Keep it simple. Follow your nose. And remember that you can always add another drop — but you can't take one away.

It is a wonderfully simple way to experience the plants we grow and distill here on our farm, and to create an aroma that is entirely your own.

Gather. Distill. Layer. Discover.
